St. Lawrence Leads the Way In Keeping Kids Safe
St. Lawrence formed the first chapter of Safe Kids New Jersey, which played a key role in passing lifesaving legislation mandating the use of bike helmets for kids and seat belts on school buses.
At St. Lawrence, we see traumatic effects of injuries every day. We believe it's our mission to educate the community to prevent injuries from happening in the first place, especially for kids.
Safe Kids New Jersey has played a key role in passing lifesaving legislation that mandates the use of bike helmets for kids and seat belts on school buses. "In New Jersey alone, more than 75 lives have been saved each year for the past 20 years as a result of Safe Kids," explains Jane Millner, Director of Community Relations and Development at St. Lawrence. For more than 10 years, St. Lawrence has hosted an annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo and Safe Kids Day. This popular event has provided more than 5,000 free bike helmets to kids in our community. "We started a new safety initiative called Think Positive that reinforces helmet use in a fun and positive way," says Ms. Millner. "The Lawrence Township police give `tickets' to children wearing their helmets when riding bikes, in-line skates or skateboards. Kids can redeem their tickets for special treats like ice cream and soft pretzels."
